Imagine growing up only knowing the ocean. The beach. Living on an island most of your life. Surrounded by salt water and sand. This is your childhood. Your ancestors lived here. Your natural coloring reflects your roots.
Now imagine AFTER this life.
You build another life in a city. A different kind of jungle to acclimate to. You create a legacy elsewhere. You change everything to become part of something new.
🦋 Decades of life happen 🦋
Another generation is created. You see the little you again. A chance to relive life. You visit the closest beach six hours away. You feel sand between your toes. You hear the water. You hear your mga apo (grandchildren in Tagalog) laughing and calling your name.
That flutter in your chest is your inner child. The child who carried responsibilities for years. The history you witnessed. The feelings tucked away so you could keep moving forward. The grip isn’t as tight anymore, but it’s still there.
There’s something so human about returning to your ✨ natural habitat ✨. Subconsciously, you’re fully present this time. You feel at home. In your paradise.
Sitting in the waves. Moving with the current. For a moment, you almost forget anyone else is there. Then you remember you’re surrounded by family, and you realize something important:
You are healed.
And what if we could be reminded of that paradise at home?
This painting is dedicated to my dad, and to all father figures. The impressionistic beach scene represents his home and the moment he returned to the water last July. He didn’t leave the ocean all day-so much so that my mom and I were worried about him. 🤔
He was simply being a kid again. Reliving his childhood. Returning to the place that shaped him.
Lolo’s Paradise is a reminder that no matter how far we travel or how much life changes us, there are places that call us back to ourselves. 🌴✨
